History of the Moultrie Service League

The Moultrie Service League was founded in January 1946 by ten charter members with a mission to utilize local volunteers and funds to serve the needs of children in the community. From its earliest years, the League focused on creating opportunities for children through projects such as a youth center, free dental clinic, speech school, scholarships, and support for children with special needs. That commitment to children and education has remained at the heart of the League for eight decades.

In 1977, the League identified the need for greater access to arts and cultural opportunities in Moultrie and Colquitt County and began working to transform the historic Moultrie High School into a cultural arts center. After years of planning, community support, and an extensive fundraising campaign, the League helped make the Colquitt County Arts Center a reality. The capital campaign launched in 1983 and ultimately secured more than $1 million in pledges, with the League contributing $50,000. Renovation was completed in 1986, and the Arts Center celebrated its grand opening on April 13, 1986.

That same commitment to children continues to shape the League’s work today. Beginning in the late 1990s, the League developed and supported Kaleidoscope: A Hands-on Adventure for Children, providing interactive arts experiences for local elementary students and eventually funding the Children’s Museum coordinator, supplies, and programming. Most recently, the League embarked on another major capital effort: after beginning to build a fund for a new interactive children’s museum in 2015-2016, seven years of accumulated excess funds and community fundraising ultimately brought the project to its $92,000 funding goal in 2022-2023. That milestone, along with an additional $35,000 commitment to renovate the Arts Center’s education wing, marked the latest chapter in the League’s long history of investing in children, the arts, and the future of Colquitt County.
